ONLINE EXERCISE CLASSES AFTER STROKE
With stroke services not always able to offer low-cost, long-term rehab it can be difficult to know how to continue working on your recovery when this stops. We hope our online exercise videos will inspire and support your physical recovery.
Our exercise sessions are delivered in collaboration with PhysioFunction, independent instructor and stroke survivor Anthony, and Brinkley Physical Therapy.
Sessions are specifically tailored for stroke survivors and set at five different levels, reflecting the large variations in stroke survivors’ physical condition and mobility post-stroke.

For each of the five levels we have developed a programme of 12 sessions, that focus on key elements, these are:
- Session 1: Mobility and movement
- Session 2: Cardio (continuous)
- Session 3: Strength (whole body)
- Session 4: Core & Flexibility
- Session 5: Mobility and movement 2
- Session 6: Cardio (Intervals)
- Session 7: Strength (upper body)
- Session 8: Core & Range Of Motion
- Session 9: Mobility and movement 3
- Session 10: Cardio (Resistance endurance)
- Session 11: Strength (lower body)
- Session 12: Core & Functional Movement
Getting Started
As you will see below the sessions range from being wholly seated exercises for people who have no or heavily restricted movement, to advanced classes for people who can walk independently for long distances. This gives all stroke survivors the opportunity to undertake a form of exercise which is appropriate to your needs, whilst also providing the possibility of you progressing through the levels in time as your mobility and balance may improve.
The best starting point is to think about what level will be most suitable for where you are right now.
Level 1
These sessions are for people who cannot move their affected arm or leg at all. The exercises will ALL be done whilst you are seated in your wheelchair, and there is no standing involved in any exercise. Please note it is a requirement that a carer or family member is available to assist you during the class.
Level 2
These sessions are for people who can move their affected leg slightly but not fully. The exercises will MOSTLY be done whilst you are seated in your wheelchair. For the standing exercises, a walking frame or transfer assist device (rotunda/rotastand/return stand) will be required. Please note it is a requirement that a carer or family member is available to assist you during the class.
Level 3
These sessions are for people who can move their affected leg reasonably well, but who may have restricted movement in their affected arm. The exercises are a mixture of seated and standing exercises. For the standing exercises, a sturdy upright chair should be available to assist with your balance. Please note it is a requirement that a carer or family member is available to supervise your standing exercises.
Level 4
These sessions are for people who can walk independently with a stick or a trekking pole indoors, and outdoors on even surfaces.
Level 5
These sessions are designed for people who can walk independently without any walking aid and can cover a distance of at least ½ a mile. Level 5 exercises are suitable if you do not get fatigued after walking for a long period of time and if you can safelt walk on uneven surfaces.
I have completed all 12 sessions what now?
When you have completed all twelve sessions you can repeat the programme again using the videos on our YouTube channel.
Alternatively if once you have completed the programme you feel ready to move up to the next level then you can do so, ensuring you listen to your body at all times.
